I was recently asked a question by a new client that caught me slightly off guard. It’s a completely valid question, but is just so not how I work. But valid.
Isn’t it in my own best interest to have my buyer pay a higher price for his new Arlington condo than to negotiate on his behalf to get a lower price?
You know, I really don’t think about that. If I did, I’d be spending way to much time obsessing about my income, which wouldn’t leave enough mind-space to be thinking about serving my clients.
Of course, I want to make a living, and in fact I have a target goal each year of how much money I need to earn in order to support my family. But he’s only going to buy the condo that he loves and that works for him financially, so it’s my job to show him the possibilities that address his requirements. One part of going out and looking at homes is to show people what they can get for the money, so I’d show him homes all over his price range so he can get a solid sense of how much more (or less) home he gets at different price points. And helping him locate and buy the home that makes him happiest will hopefully yield me a good referral and nice words of recommendation. Those are really the things that I work for.
That, plus I’m really competitive and I love getting a great deal for my clients!!
